{"id":32135,"date":"2023-02-28T05:35:10","date_gmt":"2023-02-28T05:35:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/deshmediabd.com\/?p=32135"},"modified":"2023-02-28T05:35:10","modified_gmt":"2023-02-28T05:35:10","slug":"finland-moves-closer-to-joining-nato-without-sweden","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dhakatidings.com\/?p=32135","title":{"rendered":"Finland moves closer to joining NATO without Sweden"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Finland, which has one of Europe&#8217;s longest borders with Russia, on Tuesday kicks off a parliamentary debate aimed at accelerating the country&#8217;s bid to join NATO, increasing the likelihood it will leave neighbour and military partner Sweden behind.<\/p>\n<p>Spooked by Moscow&#8217;s invasion of Ukraine, Finland and Sweden dropped their decades-long policies of military non-alignment and applied to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in May last year.<\/p>\n<p>But facing fewer diplomatic hurdles than Stockholm, Helsinki appears set to move forward even before Finland&#8217;s April general elections, as public opinion also supports membership in the transatlantic military alliance.<\/p>\n<p>The two countries have the support of all but two of NATO&#8217;s 30 members, the holdouts being Hungary and particularly Turkey.<\/p>\n<p>Many Finnish MPs have pushed for legislation affirming that Finland accepts the terms of the NATO treaty to be passed before the elections on April 2.<\/p>\n<p>Finland will debate the bill on Tuesday, coinciding with a visit from NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg &#8212; who will meet with Prime Minister Sanna Marin and President Sauli Niinisto.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bssnews.net\/news-flash\/112883\">dhngkfdvk<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Finland, which has one of Europe&#8217;s longest borders with Russia, on Tuesday kicks off a parliamentary debate aimed at accelerating the country&#8217;s bid to join NATO, increasing the likelihood it will leave neighbour and military partner Sweden behind.
