announces continuation of incentives in leather sector for 5 more years"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today announced<br \/>\ncontinuation of incentives in leather sector for at least five more years<br \/>\naimed at achieving the desired export target of the leather and footwear<br \/>\nindustry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe incentive in leather sector will be continued for at least five more<br \/>\nyears with a view to achieving the desired export target from the leather and<br \/>\nfootwear industry,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The prime minister was addressing while inaugurating the third edition of<br \/>\nthree-day Bangladesh Leather Footwear and Leathergoods International Sourcing<br \/>\nShow (BLLISS), 2019 at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC)<br \/>\nhere this morning.<\/p>\n<p>Noting that as part of export diversification, leather sector is being<br \/>\ndefined as the priority one in the economy and National Industrial<br \/>\nDevelopment Strategy, she said \u201cOur government, in its last two tenures, has<br \/>\ntaken various initiatives such as giving policy support and incentives for<br \/>\ndevelopment of the leather and footwear industry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDue to the initiatives taken by our government, 82 percent of foreign<br \/>\ncurrency is coming from export of leathergoods and footwear in leather sector while<br \/>\nfactories in this sector is mushrooming alongside increasing the interest of<br \/>\ninvesting money to this end,\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n<p>She, however, mentioned that king share of foreign currency would come<br \/>\nfrom export of leathers as raw material a decade ago.<\/p>\n<p>The premier hoped that the country will definitely achieve the target of<br \/>\nearning foreign currency of US $ 5 billion by 2022 from export of leather<br \/>\ngoods, which is now $ 1.2 billion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we can export our entire raw leather products by making those finished<br \/>\nones, we will be able to easily earn US $ 5 billion foreign currency from<br \/>\nthis sector by 2022,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>The Ministry of Commerce and the Leathergoods and Footwear Manufacturers<br \/>\nand Exporters Association of Bangladesh (LFMEAB) have jointly organised the<br \/>\nevent to attract more investment in the leather sector.<\/p>\n<p>Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi, Chairman of its Parliamentary Standing<br \/>\nCommittee Tofail Ahmed, PM\u2019s Private Industry and Investment Adviser Salman<br \/>\nFazlur Rahman, Commerce Ministry Secretary Dr. Md Jafar Uddin and LFMEAB<br \/>\nPresident Saiful Islam spoke on the occasion.<\/p>\n<p>Ministers, parliament members, diplomats, dignitaries and the leaders of<br \/>\ndifferent trade bodies were also present.<\/p>\n<p>An interactive audio-video presentation on various sides of the past,<br \/>\npresent and the future of Bangladesh\u2019s leather sector was screened at the<br \/>\nfunction.<\/p>\n<p>Stating that the leather goods and footwear industry has become the second<br \/>\nlargest export earning sector in the last decade surpassing jute and jute<br \/>\nproducts\u2019 export earnings, Sheikh Hasina said \u201cThis sector attained second<br \/>\nposition in the volume of export earning only after the readymade garments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The premier called upon the foreign investors and buyers attending the show<br \/>\nto invest in Bangladesh in larger scale, saying \u201cMake investment in<br \/>\nBangladesh particularly in leather sector as many countries would not be able<br \/>\nto give facilities, Bangladesh is now offering for foreign investors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In this regard, she said \u201cBangladesh offers cheapest labour facilities and<br \/>\nproper training is also being given to them\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>She said the move was taken to boost local and foreign investment in the<br \/>\nleather sector and make it sustainable.<\/p>\n<p>Stressing the need for bringing diversification in leather goods to<br \/>\nincrease export, Sheikh Hasina said the entrepreneurs will have to develop<br \/>\nnew products and explore new export markets.<\/p>\n<p>In this regard, she assured them of providing necessary assistance from the<br \/>\ngovernment.<\/p>\n<p>The premier said an environment-friendly leather industrial estate has been<br \/>\nset up in Savar for flourishing the leather sector.<\/p>\n<p>Praising the organizers for arranging the show for the third time in the<br \/>\ncountry, the prime minister said it would attract more foreign investment in<br \/>\nBangladesh\u2019s leather footwear and leather goods industry sector as well as<br \/>\ncreate huge enthusiasm among the investors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt will also help the entrepreneurs around the world know about the<br \/>\ngovernment\u2019s policy assistance and patronization alongside project quality<br \/>\nand standard of Bangladeshi leather goods and footwear products before the<br \/>\nworld community,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Mentioning that her government has relocated the tannery industries in<br \/>\nSavar from Hazaribagh, Sheikh Hasina said \u201cThere will have allocation of at<br \/>\nleast 150 acres of land in the extended project of Leather Industry City in<br \/>\nSavar for setting up composite leather products and footwear factories by<br \/>\nfollowing international standards and Leather Working Group (LWG)<br \/>\ncertification.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She however said equal opportunities and policy supports will be ensured<br \/>\nfor all export sectors as all discriminatory barriers will be removed.<\/p>\n<p>Sheikh Hasina said her government has created scope so that businesspersons<br \/>\ncan do businesses. \u201cThe government is not doing business.
