\u201cNot only in our country, we\u2019ve also seen in the developing nations that
\nthe repression on children and women has spread like a mental disease \u2026 so,
\nmales and females, everybody will have to be aware so that no child and woman
\nare tortured,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
She added: \u201cSpecial attention should be given so that the children and
\nwomen remain protected.\u201d<\/p>\n
The prime minister was addressing a function as the chief guest on the
\noccasion of the \u201cBegum Rokeya Day\u201d and distribution of Rokeya Padak-2019 at
\nOsmani Memorial Auditorium in the capital this morning.<\/p>\n
Sheikh Hasina said: \u201cIn fact the males inflict repression on the women. So
\nthey should think that they\u2019ve also girl child and what will they do if their
\nchild is tortured by anybody. That\u2019s why, awareness is very much necessary
\n(in this regard).\u201d<\/p>\n
The Begum Rokeya Day is being observed in the country today marking the
\n139th birth and 87th death anniversaries of the pioneer of women renaissance
\nBegum Rokeya Shakhawat Hossain.<\/p>\n
The Women and Children Affairs Ministry arranged the function with State
\nMinister for Women and Children Affairs Begum Fazilatun Nesa Indira in the
\nchair.<\/p>\n
Secretary of the ministry Qamrun Nahar delivered the welcome address and
\nalso conducted the Rokeya Padak distribution ceremony.<\/p>\n
On behalf of the Rokeya Padak recipients, Begum Selina Khalek spoke
\nexpressing her feelings about receiving the award.<\/p>\n
At the function, the prime minister handed over Rokeya Padak-2019 to five
\neminent women for their outstanding contributions to women and social
\ndevelopment.<\/p>\n
The recipients are \u2013 Begum Selina Khalek, Principal Shamsun Nahar, Dr
\nNurunnahar Faizunnessa (posthumous), Miss Papri Basu and Begum Akhtar Jahan.<\/p>\n
Pointing out that the government has enacted different laws and policies to
\ncheck child and woman repression, the premier said only enacting laws is not
\nenough, awareness is also a must to prevent such torture.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ve formulated laws, but everything doesn\u2019t happen by enacting laws,\u201d
\nshe said, adding awareness is also essential to prevent torture on children
\nand women.<\/p>\n
Sheikh Hasina said her government has framed the Domestic Violence
\nPrevention Law, the Dowry Prevention Law, the Early Marriage Prevention Law
\nand enacted the Women Development Policy and the National Children Policy for
\nthe welfare of the children and womenfolk.<\/p>\n
\u201cAwareness has been built up among the common people and girls about early
\nmarriage due to framing of the law,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Sheikh Hasina said her government is doing everything necessary to
\nmaterialise Begum Rokeya\u2019s dream of establishing women rights.<\/p>\n
She said Begum Rokeya wanted a woman to become the head of any state and
\nshe to move keeping pace with males in the family and society and enjoy equal
\nrights.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ve at least ensured it and our womenfolk have started their journey
\ntowards the path of light overcoming the darkness,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Sheikh Hasina said Bangladesh is marching ahead in terms of women
\ndevelopment by becoming a \u2018sarathi\u2019 (company) of dreams of Begum Rokeya.<\/p>\n
\u201cBangladesh has set an example in the world in terms of women development
\nlike it has become a role model of economic advancement,\u201d she said, adding:
\n\u201cWe\u2019ll have to keep up this progress.\u201d<\/p>\n
About the rights of women, the prime minister said desired development of
\nthe country can not be possible leaving half of the population behind.<\/p>\n
Sheikh Hasina said her government has been working relentlessly to further
\ndevelop the country taking male and female together to materialise dreams of
\nthe harbinger of women renaissance Begum Rokeya.<\/p>\n
Referring to the success of the girls in education, the premier said the
\ngirls are doing good results in the examinations in comparison to the boys as
\nthey (girls) are attentive to their education.<\/p>\n
\u201cA self-confidence has been created among the girls and their parents
\nencourage them in pursuing more study \u2026 due to this an \u2018bibartan
\n(evolution) and change has taken place in the society,\u201d she said, adding it
\nis a very good side for the country.<\/p>\n
Sheikh Hasina said the girls are also demonstrating their success in the
\ngames and sports. In this connection, she mentioned clinching gold medals of
\nthe Bangladesh women cricket team and female weightlifters in the ongoing
\nSouth Asian Games in Nepal.<\/p>\n
The prime minister said Bangladesh is advancing and it will continue to
\nmove. \u201cWe will build Bangladesh as a hunger and poverty-free country as
\ndreamt by the Father of the Nation with the united efforts of all,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
In this regard, Sheikh Hasina listed various steps of Bangabandhu for the
\nwelfare of the womenfolk. \u201cBangabandhu had huge contributions to establishing
\nthe rights of the women and ensuring their place in every field of the
\nsociety,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Following Bangabandhu\u2019s footprint, she said, her government has taken
\nvarious initiatives for the wellbeing of the womenfolk.<\/p>\n
Ministers, PM\u2019s advisers, parliament members, women leaders, and high civil
\nand military officials were present at the function.<\/p>\n
Earlier, the prime minister inaugurated the modernisation work of Osmani
\nMemorial Auditorium implemented by the Public Works Department under the
\nMinistry of Housing and Public Works.<\/p>\n
