\u201cWe have been working on making Bangladesh Police as a modern and time-
\nbefitting force so that the people can get desired services from the law
\nenforcement agency,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
The prime minister said this while inaugurating the Police Week-2020 at
\nRajarbagh Police Lines here this morning.<\/p>\n
The premier said she regards the expenditure for people and their welfare
\nas an investment. \u201cIn the same way, we also consider the allocation for
\npolice as an investment, not as expenditure,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n
She went on saying that there have been substantive qualitative changes in
\npolice and the force is able to achieve the confidence and trust of the
\npeople due to huge development activities taken by her government.<\/p>\n
She also said, \u201cWe will push forward this development pace for the police
\nin days to come.\u201d<\/p>\n
On the occasion, an attractive parade was arranged at Rajarbag Police
\nLines.<\/p>\n
The prime minister inspected the parade and took salute of different
\ncontingents of Bangladesh Police.<\/p>\n
She later distributed medals to 118 police officials for their outstanding
\ncontribution to maintaining the law and order in the society.<\/p>\n
Of them, 14 received Bangladesh Police Medal (BPM-gallantry) while 28 got
\nBPM (Service), 20 secured President Police Medal (PPM-gallantry) and 56
\nawarded PPM (service).<\/p>\n
Sheikh Hasina hoped that the awards would motivate the police personnel to
\nbe more spirited in discharging their duties, urging the law enforcers to
\nplay more proactive role in ensuring road safety and eliminating drugs from
\nthe society.<\/p>\n
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr.
\nMohammad Javed Patwary and Additional Inspector General of Police (Admin) Md.
\nMoinur Rahman Chowdhury were present on the dais.<\/p>\n
Cabinet members, MPs, senior government officials, leaders of various
\nprofessional bodies and civil society members joined the function.<\/p>\n
The prime minister said her government has taken various steps for the
\noverall development of the police force.<\/p>\n
The steps include increasing manpower, imparting proper training, forming
\nspecial police units, building modern labs, arranging vehicles and modern
\nequipment, allocating lands for police establishments, providing ration and
\ntreatment facilities for police personnel, she said.<\/p>\n
She also said specialized units in organizational structure of Bangladesh
\nPolice such as Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), Tourist Police, River
\nPolice, Specialized Security and Protection Battalion and Industrial Police
\nhave already been formed.<\/p>\n
She continued that with the aim of uprooting terrorism from Bangladesh,
\nCounter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC), and Anti-Terrorism Unit
\n(ATU) have also been formed.<\/p>\n
The premier said, \u201cWe have set up Cyber Police Centre, DNA Lab, Modern
\nForensic Lab, Automated Finger Print Identification System (AFIS) and modern
\nchemical lab.\u201d<\/p>\n
Two battalions of Armed Police and one battalion of RAB have been
\nestablished and deployed at Coxs Bazar to ensure the security of the Rohingya
\ncamps and adjacent areas, she added.<\/p>\n
Sheikh Hasina said that her government has established \u2018Bangladesh Police
\nKallyan Trust\u2019 in 2000 for the welfare of police personnel.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have given police the Community Bank under the \u2018Bangladesh Police
\nKallyan Trust,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n
The premier said her government has sanctioned ration facilities for cent
\npercent police personnel which was only for 20 percent policemen before the
\nAwami League assumed office in 1996.<\/p>\n
She also said life-long ration facility for the retired police members is
\nalso in special consideration of the government.<\/p>\n
The prime minister said her government has taken effective measures
\nincluding allocation of lands to establish police stations, outposts,
\ninvestigation centres, barracks and dormitories.<\/p>\n
To ensure treatment facilities for police members, she said \u201cWe have taken
\neffective steps to improve Divisional Police Hospitals including the Central
\nPolice Hospital in Razarbagh\u201d.<\/p>\n
Sheikh Hasina appreciated the police force for their relentless work to
\nensure road safety.<\/p>\n
Stressing the need for raising awareness among the people, the premier
\nasked all concerned to obey the traffic rules.<\/p>\n
She said her government has introduced the National Emergency Service-999
\nwhich has earned huge popularity under the supervision of Bangladesh Police
\nas they (people) easily avail the services of police, fire service and
\nambulance by simply dialing 999.<\/p>\n
Sheikh Hasina recalled with profound respect the sacrifice of the martyred
\npolice members, saying, \u201cThe patriotic police personnel of Rajarbagh Police
\nLines put up the first armed resistance against the Pakistani occupation
\nforces on the fateful night of 25th March in 1971.\u201d<\/p>\n
She also remembered 29 police officials who were killed in the mayhem
\nconducted by the BNP-Jamaat alliance in 2013, 2014 and 2015 in the name of
\nso-called movement.<\/p>\n
She heavily came down on BNP-Jamaat alliance for killing innocent people by
\narson attacks.<\/p>\n
Appreciating the police force for saving the country from the devastation,
\nthe prime minister said \u201cPolice put up resistance by risking their lives to
\nward off the BNP-Jamaat\u2019s mayhem in 2013, 2014 and 2015.\u201d<\/p>\n
The police also have played an important role in maintaining continuation
\nof the country\u2019s democracy, she added.<\/p>\n
She appreciated Bangladesh Police as it has recently recruited 10,000 new
\nconstables in a transparent way setting an imitable example for all.<\/p>\n
Stating that Bangladesh has adopted \u201czero tolerance policy\u201d against
\nterrorism, militancy, corruption and narcotics, the premier said the
\ngovernment is committed to stamp out the menaces from the country.<\/p>\n
She highly applauded Bangladesh Police for doing a praiseworthy job to
\nbring the rumor mongers to book for spreading rumors by using social media
\nand other technologies to mislead the people.<\/p>\n
The premier has sought all kinds of cooperation from the police as
\nBangladesh has been advancing fast economically.<\/p>\n
She described the year of 2020 as very important for Bangladesh, saying
\nthis year, the country is going to celebrate the birth centenary of Father of
\nthe Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman who dreamt of building a \u201cGolden
\nBangladesh\u201d free from poverty and hunger.<\/p>\n
The prime minister said her government has been working for materializing
\nthe dream of Bangabandhu.<\/p>\n
She reaffirmed her commitment of making Bangladesh a developed and
