RMG workers block highway in Gazipur protesting retrenchment

The workers of a Ready-made Garment have been staging a demonstration by blocking road in Gazipur’s Malekbari area protesting the retrenchment of 76 workers of the factory.
The workers of It Garments Ltd, owned by Ha-Meem Group, gathered around 10:30 AM on Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway and blocked the road.
Vehicular movement on the highway remained suspended for two and half an hour due to the blockade.
Witnesses said that the workers took to the street as they found the closure notice on the main gate of the factory. The vehicular movement on the busy road remained suspended, causing suffering to the commuters.
Being informed, police and army personnel rushed to the spot and requested the workers to leave the highway, Gazipur Superintendent of Police Mizanur Rahman said.
The vehicular movement came to normal around 1:00 PM as police assured them of meeting their demand, he added.
